Graduate Assistant, GEAR UP Grant

Department: Graduate and Adult Programs
Location: Des Moines, IA

This position will oversee the mentoring component to the GEAR UP grant, provide oversight for out of classroom activities for the GEAR UP grant, and provide other student success support during the academic year for GEAR UP grant students as well as other campus students, as appropriate.

Essential Functions of Job:

  1. Provide oversight of non-classroom GEAR UP GV Gear Up Scholars Academy activities in conjunction with Student Success Manager and other campus individuals
  2. Work with Student Success Manager to develop and implement mentoring program.
  3. Supervise mentors working with GV Scholars Academy participants and all GEAR Up students during Fall 2020.
  4. Continue mentoring efforts with GEAR UP participants through end of Spring 2021.
  5. Develop additional student support efforts for GEAR UP participants next academic year as well as support campus student success efforts as appropriate.
  6. Assist with data collection to evaluate GEAR UP program.


Qualifications and Requirements:

  1. Must be enrolled in a Graduate Program at Grand View University
  2. Strong interpersonal skills and desire to work with at risk entering college students.
  3. Ability to use Microsoft Office products and general internet.
  4. Must be able to work evenings and weekends on occasion during fall and spring semester, as needed.
  5. Must be able to work daily for extended hours during GV Scholars Academy.
