Full-time Esports Coach/Operations Assistant

Position: Full-time League of Legends Coach

Location: Grand View University, Des Moines, Iowa

Position Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree.
  • Coaching experience at the top amateur, collegiate, or professional level. 1+ year desired.
  • Deep understanding of the competitive League of Legends scenes.
  • Proficient in online platforms, such as tournament boards, clients, office suite.
  • Basic knowledge of broadcasting and streaming is preferred
  • Esports lab computer maintenance and troubleshooting.
  • Thorough knowledge and ability of collegiate esports league rules and policies. Must make sure the team is following all rules, regulations, and guidelines for respective game titles and leagues. The ability to articulate these to student-athletes is also required.
  • An understanding of Grand View University's mission and goals is required. Applicants must have the ability to explain these to student-athletes.
  • Ability to identify and recruit student-athletes.
  • Well-developed communication skills combined with strong time management and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work weekends and evenings. This position requires travel (some overnight) for competition and conferences. International travel is rare but may occur.
  • Non-traditional and flexible work hours.
    • Duties will tend to be (afternoon/evening practices and games, some weekend travel).
  • Ability to lift 30 pounds/computer equipment. Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk working, coaching, or walking campus.

Desired Qualifications:

  • 1+ year experience playing at a high level is desired.
  • Degree or background in Business, Marketing, Sports Management or similar a plus.
  • In-depth knowledge of gaming platforms and technology, including Twitch, Steam, OBS, etc.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office & Google Drive.

Core Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for recruiting and coaching the League of Legends roster at Grand View University.
  • Manage all aspects of the League team, including scheduling, planning practices, match/event preparation, coaching, recruiting, budgeting, organizing travel arrangements when needed, supervision (academic/well-being), and managing student workers, all with Director help when required.
  • Provide support to the JV League of Legends team, including scheduling, supervision, selecting coaching staff and recruitment.
  • Provide support to the Esports Director.


  • Assist GV Esports Director and staff with email, phone call, high school visits, campus visits for prospects.
  • Assist in fulfilling institution esports recruiting goals.


  • Ability to chaperone and drive students to and from competition safely and reliably.
  • Assisting with general program operations.
  • Assist in maintaining the esports lab equipment.
  • Assist with supervision of student workers, if/when applicable.
  • Assist GV Esports Director in obtaining and fostering partnerships and sponsorship.

Other duties but not limited to:

  • Work under supervision of GV Esports Director and VP of Student Affairs.
  • Provide support to the GV Esports Director when needed or required.
  • Help with organization, fundraising, set up and tear down of annual esports tournament hosted on campus every March.
  • Collaborate with staff on fundraising and sponsorship securement.
  • Organize, market, and execute summer camps and content/events for GV Esport program team fundraising.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Grand View University is seeking someone who is a multi-faceted individual to help program operations and aiding in continued growth and brand of Grand View Esports. The preferred candidate will have ability to command a room and provide the students with a positive role model to advance them as people and players with the end goal of becoming a Grand View University graduate.
