Director of Student Success

Department: Academic Affairs

General Purpose of Job:

Serve as the champion – the chief expert and advocate – for student success and oversee inclusive academic support services for all student populations, including traditional, non-traditional, and online. Provide leadership and implementation of strategies to address persistence and completion issues. Promotes, encourages, and measures activities related to student success.

 

Implement the vision for academic support services at GV. Serve students by providing strategic oversight of and operational support for student academic success, including tutoring and other forms of learning support, student referrals for support services, and data analysis to inform programming, policy, and practice.

 

Provide leadership for a collaborative student success environment that sustains a network that connects student service areas including CETL, the Library, Disability Services, the college Deans, Graduate and Professional Studies, GV Complete, Student Life, Institutional Effectiveness, the Writing Center, the Math Lab, and the faculty in support of the student success mission.

 

Essential Functions of Job:

  1. Provide generative thought leadership for student success and academic support.
  2. In collaboration with the Faculty Development Director, utilize student success findings to inform advances in pedagogy, course design, and curriculum design.
  3. In collaboration with Library Director, utilize student success findings to support student research needs and development of strong information literacy skills.
  4. In collaboration with Provost and AVP-IE, provide expertise and guidance based on current knowledge about student success principles, theories, and best practices to improve student success.
  5. In collaboration with other VPs and AVP-IE, develop and implement a comprehensive short- and long-term student success plan to improve persistence and completion rates. Conduct regular assessments of progress towards student-success objectives and report results.
  6. In support of established student success plans and objectives, implement strategies and practices related to, but not limited to, supporting the first-year and transfer student experience.
  7. In collaboration with the Advancement office, participate in identifying, writing, and administering student success grants, as appropriate.
  8. Fully utilize and advocate for the functionality of the SSC platform to support student success. Use SSC analytics and other means to forecast and prioritize student support needs.
  9. Manage triage and case-management for SSC alerts and progress reports.
  10. Support the work of the Council of Success and governance committees related to student success.
  11. Adopt best practices and collaborate with staff and faculty to build effective learning-support programs, including marketing those programs and adopting best practices to recruit students to them.
  12. Engage with faculty members to identify learning support needs at the course and program level and to strategize ways of addressing those needs.
  13. Ensure the availability of tutors for all students (including on-ground, evening, weekend, and online students).
  14. Lead planning for and execution of support for students on academic warning or probation.
  15. Develop and implement a plan to support targeted students who need academic support and credit recovery, which could include teaching formal courses in the curriculum, workshops, online programs, or other deliveries.
  16. Manage student success and learning support budgets and supervise staff (including the Disabilities Services Coordinator).
  17. Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications and Requirements:

  1. Master’s degree, doctorate preferred. Field of degree open with preferences for education, higher education, counseling, student learning, development
  2. Excellent leadership and supervisory skills
  3. Successful experience working with college level students and their academic success
  4. Excellent communication skills including written and oral (presentations)
  5. Exceptional judgment and discretion
  6. Emotional stability, personal maturity, and professionalism required to manage the diverse demands of the position, deal with conflict, resolve problems, make effective decisions, and prioritize
  7. Ability to initiate, plan, implement, and evaluate programs and services
  8. Data analysis skills

Working Conditions:

Work is performed in a normal office setting. Sits, stands, bends, lifts and moves intermittently during working hours. During course of day, can interact with students, faculty, and staff by computer, phone, or in person. Requires eye-hand coordination, dexterity, and a normal range of vision and hearing.
